Principal

Gary leads the firm with a dedication to providing the finest quality service. He utilizes skills developed with experience in the architectural professional and hands on practical construction in the field.

Gary was educated at Syracuse University, receiving a Bachelor of Architecture in 1984. While at Syracuse, he enjoyed a teaching assistantship in Architectural History, employment at the Planning Department of the University, and a year as President of the Architectural Student Government. He was awarded the Alpha Rho Chi medal in 1984 for Leadership and Service by the faculty and classmates.

Gary completed his studies at Syracuse with a summer program in London on a Cutler Scholarship and traveled extensively through Europe. He was accompanied by a classmate, Dawn Heid, who is now his wife. Upon returning to the States, the two young architects moved to Chicago to participate in its great architectural heritage.

Employment opportunities included a tenure at Krueck and Olsen Architects where Gary gained invaluable experience in the fine art of detailing buildings, and nine years at Booth/Hansen & Associates. His experience at BHA provided a strong foundation for creation of Burns + Beyerl as he was exposed to all aspects of the profession for both residential and commercial clients.

Since moving to Chicago, Gary has enjoyed designing and renovating several homes with his wife. Their previous home was published in the Better Homes and Gardens magazine "Do It Yourself" in 1998. Their current home is perpetually under construction. His current home was featured in The Chicago Tribune magazine section on February 23rd, 2003 and in Trends Remodeling Magazine, Winter, 2004
.

In the fall of 1999, Gary and Dawn welcomed the addition of their daughter, Grace to the family.

In 2007, Gary completed a home at Tryon Farm, a conservation development in Michigan City, Indiana. The building features the firm's commitment to sustainable architecture.

Gary has a strong passion for landscape design and gardening and is anxiously awaiting completion of his home conservatory. An interior fountain running down through the garden remains on the wish list. In 2008, Gary oversaw the design and implementation of a "woodland planting" green roof at the firm's rooftop courtyard.

"When we build, let us think that we build forever. Let it be not for present delight, nor for present use alone; let it be such work as our descendants will thank us for."
John Ruskin
